The Showroom Theatre in Prince Albert is hosting film screenings curated independently by Daniel Dercksen, the driving force behind the insependent training initiative The Writing Studio, A published film and theatre journalist of 40 years, Daniel’s been teaching workshops and courses in creative writing, playwriting and screenwriting throughout South Africa since he formed the studio in 1998.

We will be screening the film Master Harold…and the Boys, a powerful adaptation of Athol Fugard’s acclaimed play. This screening is dedicated to the memory of Athol Fugard, renowned South African playwright, novelist, and actor, who passed away at the age of 92 on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Fugard was celebrated for his fearless storytelling and his commitment to exposing the brutal realities of apartheid through his works. His contributions to the arts and his activism have left an indelible mark on South African culture and the global literary landscape.
Master Harold…and the Boys is a 2010 drama film based on the original theatre play by Athol Fugard. The story revolves around Hally, a white South African adolescent, who is torn between his father’s expectations and the positive influence of his surrogate fathers, Sam and Willie, who are black waiters. The film explores themes of racism, friendship, and the struggle for personal identity. Hally’s relationship with his biological father is strained, and he finds solace in the guidance and support of Sam and Willie. The film captures the emotional turmoil and societal challenges faced by the characters, making it a poignant and thought-provoking piece. Wednesday 19 March @ 7pm. Babette’s Feast is a profound and elegant film that touches upon themes of generosity, art, and the transformative power of food. Released in 1987 and directed by Gabriel Axel, it is based on a story by Danish author Karen Blixen (also known as Isak Dinesen). Set in a remote village in 19th-century Denmark, the film explores the austere lives of two sisters who lead a strict religious community. The arrival of Babette, a French refugee, brings a clash of cultures and ideas, enriching the villagers’ lives in unexpected ways. The film delves into spiritual and moral questions, highlighting themes of grace, forgiveness, and the nature of true devotion. Babette’s Feast is lauded for its exquisite cinematography, direction, and performances.
