In the high-octane thriller Mutiny, Jason Statham stars as Cole Reed, a former Royal Marine commando and London SCO19 Specialist Firearm police officer who now works as personal security for his friend and mentor, Thai shipping tycoon Tibu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram). When Tibu is murdered in front of him, Cole sets out on a mission to avenge his brother-in-arms — a mission that takes him into international waters, where he uncovers sinister secrets that go deeper than he ever expected.
With its themes of justice, revenge, loyalty, and protecting the innocent, the plot’s origins began with the film’s producer, Marc Butan (Plane, Ad Astra).
“It was an idea I had. I’d just done Plane with our director Jean-François Richet, and we were trying to think of situations where you have the heroic character up against big obstacles. We liked a contained environment and so we were talking about different ideas of how and where you could have a hero trapped that we hadn’t seen before. We started talking about cargo ships and built backwards from there. How does this guy end up on a ship and what is he doing there?”
For director Jean-François Richet (Plane, Mesrine), when they were considering potential leading men for this as-yet-unnamed heroic character, only one actor sprang to mind —iconic action hero and box-office star Jason Statham (his films have grossed more than $2 billion).
“I immediately thought of Jason when I had the script – written by Lindsay Michel (Sandpiper) and J.P. Davis (Plane) – A film comes to life when the actors join. When Jason said yes to the film, I could start to visualise what Mutiny might be. He responded really quickly. I sent him the script on Friday, he read it over the weekend, and by Monday we were already making plans. To do a movie is difficult, but with Jason everything was easy. Mutiny is Jason Statham. He has become the film.”
Statham is pulling double-duty on Mutiny as both leading man and — via his production company Punch Palace — as producer.
“I love the intricacies of how a movie gets made. I know the kind of films I want to make and the people I want to work with. As a producer, you get to fulfil those dreams. You’re also more appreciative of the end result because you know the difficulties you’ve faced along the way.”
The cast and crew began the shoot at London’s world-famous Pinewood Studios. Whilst some interiors could be filmed at Pinewood, it was paramount to director Richet that they shoot the ensuing maritime madness on a real cargo ship. Enter the Skylight — a 150m long, 10,000 tonne cargo ship moored in Malta — to star as the Artemis.
“From the beginning, the director insisted we shoot on an actual container ship for reality,” recalls Butan. “We were all on board with the idea. We wanted to shoot as much as we could on the ocean, as opposed to doing it on stage with blue screen. We wanted to make it feel as authentic as possible, as dangerous as possible. It’s exciting. We couldn’t ask for a better backdrop.”
“It was incredibly challenging finding a container ship. It was probably the hardest part of making this movie. We did deals on three or four different ones and lost them all for various reasons. We actually started shooting the movie without a ship to film on! When Skylight finally came through, there was a huge buzz around the crew.
Statham was suitably impressed when he met his considerable co-star; “They’re much bigger than you have a reference for because you usually only see them passing by on the horizon. When you actually get up close, they are massive. They boggle the mind. They’re like floating islands. It’s something quite special to see it in the flesh.”
With its relentless intensity, expansive high-stakes, breath-taking action and nonstop momentum, Mutiny is going to be a must-see theatrical event anchored by Statham’s enduring star power.
A cross between Die Hard and Under Siege, it’s truly global in scope, and a film where the action never feels contained. Statham always delivers and is sure to do so once again as a one-man army protecting innocent victims and avenging those who have been wronged. As the filmmakers ready themselves for its release, the experience of making Mutiny is one they will never forget.
“It’s a fast-paced, action-packed, characterful, ride-of-your-life movie,” sums up Wallis.
“Essentially, it’s a revenge story, but there are so many other layers — greed, corruption, honour,” adds Statham.
As for the director, Richet would love to revisit this world if the chance ever arose. “I would be very happy to do that. I love these characters.” Statham, for one, would be first in line. “Richet is a man that I really respect and loved working for,” Statham opines. “I’ll be queuing up to do another movie with him.”
JEAN-FRANÇOIS – DIRECTOR
Jean-François Richet is a French film director and screenwriter whose career has spanned both European and U.S. cinema. He received widespread acclaim for Mesrine, his ambitious two-part crime epic starring
Vincent Cassel. The films established Richet as a filmmaker capable of combining large-scale storytelling, complex characters and visceral, realistic action. His international work includes Assault on Precinct 13, starring Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburne and Gabriel Byrne; Blood Father, starring Mel Gibson; and Plane, starring Gerard Butler. These films further demonstrated his ability to bring emotional depth and strong character work to the action-thriller genre. His latest film, Mutiny, stars Jason Statham. Known for his muscular and immersive filmmaking, Richet often explores characters facing extreme moral and physical pressure, combining intensity, realism and a strong sense of cinematic spectacle. LINDSAY MICHEL – WRITER
Lindsay Michel is a screenwriter specialising in sci-fi/action/thrillers, who enjoys creating high-concept, high-stakes stories in exciting settings. . Last year, she sold her original spec PILGRIM to Netflix in a pre-empt with Jason Bateman’s Aggregate producing alongside Antoine Fuqua’s Hill District Media. Her previous spec, VIENNA, is setup with the Nee Brothers producing and Maria Schrader attached to direct. Lindsay is a Philadelphia native and a graduate of Drexel University’s Cinema & Television Department, with a B.S. in Screenwriting & Playwriting.
J.P. DAVIS – WRITER
Born in New York City and raised in France, J.P. Davis received a degree in International Affairs from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. With encouragement from his mentor, Oscar-winning William Goldman, J.P. moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Davis quickly converted, starring in his original screenplay Fighting Tommy Riley, which was produced independently on a budget of $100,000. His second original screenplay, Violence of Action, was released by Paramount Pictures in March 2022 under the title The Contractor. J.P. also wrote the forthcoming action thriller The Plane, which stars Gerry Butler as a commercial pilot who must save his passengers after a forced landing in a hostile war zone. Lionsgate will distribute the film, which was directed by Jean-Francois Richet and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Marc Butan. Davis is currently writing an Original thriller for MadRiver and Nomad, with Jeremy Saulnier attached to direct. For Television, he is developing an Untitled Series in collaboration with filmmaker Gavin O’Connor. J.P. is a dual US/French citizen currently living in Los Angeles, California.
